Hygrophila stricta

Hygrophila stricta is a larger, more architectural species than its commonly kept cousin H. polysperma, producing big, lance-shaped leaves with clearly impressed venation on stiff, upright stems. In emergent conditions it develops into a substantial shrubby plant that can reach 60 cm or more, making it one of the most impressive background specimens available for large paludariums with a tropical stream or lake-margin theme. Its bold, large leaves provide visual contrast against finer-textured plants.

It is a robust and easy grower in the emergent zone, tolerating a wide range of light levels and temperatures. Flower spikes with small lavender blooms appear at the upper nodes of established plants under good conditions, adding seasonal interest. Pruning the main stem encourages branching and a denser, more attractive background mass.
