Hypoptopoma inexspectatum is perhaps the most visually striking member of its genus, displaying a prominently spotted body pattern of dark ocellations against a pale or brownish background. The species is described from Amazonian Brazil and is characterised by its laterally positioned eyes — a hallmark of the genus — which give it an alert, almost charismatic expression compared to more typical bottom-clinging catfishes.

Like all Hypoptopoma, H. inexspectatum is a free-swimming loricariid that actively patrols the midwater as well as grazing on submerged surfaces. In its natural habitat of Amazonian rivers and floodplains, it moves over wood, leaves, and algae-coated substrate in open-water areas, unlike the more strictly substrate-associated Otocinclus. This free-swimming tendency makes it a highly visible and active aquarium inhabitant.

In the aquarium, H. inexspectatum is an attractive oddity that provides both aesthetic interest and practical algae management. Its spotted pattern makes it stand out in a planted community, and its active behaviour ensures it is frequently in view. It requires a somewhat larger aquarium than Otocinclus, good water quality, and the company of a few conspecifics for social stability.
