Indian almond leaves (Terminalia catappa) have been used in the aquarium hobby for decades, particularly among betta and shrimp keepers who value their tannin and humic acid content, antimicrobial properties, and ability to mimic Southeast Asian peat-swamp habitats. The extract contains condensed and hydrolysable tannins, humic acids, flavonoids, and bioactive polyphenols that have been shown to reduce bacterial and fungal pathogen pressure, lower surface tension, mildly acidify soft water, and improve the colour expression of fish such as bettas, chocolate gouramis, and wild-type shrimp.
