Indian Spiny Eel

This Indian subcontinent population of the Mastacembelus armatus complex is imported primarily from Indian exporters and displays characteristic tire track patterning with warm brown and golden-tan tones. Genetic and morphological studies of this species complex suggest multiple distinct populations across its enormous range, and Indian material may represent one or more separate species.

Care requirements are identical to other large members of the complex: a very large aquarium with deep fine sand, robust filtration, and a fully sealed lid. This is a fish that will live for well over a decade with proper care and should be treated as a long-term commitment. Its large adult size makes it unsuitable for anything smaller than a 300 L aquarium.

Earthworms are the ideal food and produce a very strong feeding response. Frozen bloodworm, prawns, and sinking pellets broaden the diet effectively. It is peaceful toward tankmates too large to consume and co-exists well with large robust catfish, cichlids, and bichirs in a South Asian predator community setup.
