Indochinese Spiny Eel

Macrognathus maculatus is a widespread and adaptable spiny eel from the Mekong River drainage and connected lowland river systems across Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos. Its brownish body with irregular dark blotching provides effective camouflage in the murky, leaf-littered waters it inhabits naturally.

Compared to some of its more sensitive congeners, this species is notably forgiving of aquarium conditions and settles into captivity with minimal fuss. It accepts a wide range of water parameters and begins feeding on meaty foods within days of arrival. This robustness makes it an ideal second step for aquarists who have successfully kept the lesser spiny eel and wish to try a slightly larger species.

It is thoroughly peaceful with tankmates of appropriate size and co-exists well alongside medium barbs, loaches, larger tetras, and peaceful catfish. Multiple individuals can sometimes be kept together in larger tanks without major conflict.
