Inornate Rainbowfish

Melanotaenia splendida inornata is perhaps the most widespread and adaptable of the M. splendida subspecies complex, ranging across a large portion of Australia's Northern Territory including the Adelaide, Daly, and Victoria River systems. It occupies an enormous variety of habitats — from fast-flowing rocky streams to calm, turbid waterholes — and this ecological flexibility translates to exceptional hardiness in the aquarium.

Adult males develop a pleasing silver-blue body with an attractive red-edged scale pattern along the upper flanks and vivid orange to red finnage that brightens considerably during courtship displays. Females are more subdued but still attractively silvery. The species is larger than many hobbyist rainbowfish, requiring a spacious aquarium for long-term health.

Melanotaenia splendida inornata is a prolific breeder that will readily spawn among floating plants or mops in the aquarium without any special encouragement. Its hardiness and willingness to breed make it an excellent introduction to the splendida complex for hobbyists exploring Australian rainbowfish.
