Iodotropheus sprengerae 'Boadzulu'

Iodotropheus sprengerae 'Boadzulu' is the Boadzulu Island population of the beloved Rusty Cichlid, one of the most peaceable and attractive of all mbuna. Males develop a distinctive rusty-brown to warm mauve-purple iridescence across the body and fins, with dusky bar markings visible in certain light. This subdued but rich colouration makes the Rusty Cichlid stand out against the typical blue-and-black mbuna palette.

The Boadzulu population is one of the most commonly available and genetically stable populations in the hobby. Unlike most mbuna, I. sprengerae is notably less aggressive, making it one of the few mbuna that can be kept successfully with more peaceful cichlids such as Aulonocara. Females mouthbrood for 21–28 days. The species is sexually mature at a smaller size than most mbuna, which contributes to its popularity as a breeding project for hobbyists. Hard, alkaline water is still required.
