Iodotropheus sprengerae 'Chinyankwazi'

Iodotropheus sprengerae 'Chinyankwazi' is the population of Rusty Cichlid endemic to Chinyankwazi Island in the southeastern arm of Lake Malawi. Like the Boadzulu form, males develop the characteristic rusty to mauve-brown iridescence that gives the species its common name. Chinyankwazi specimens are noted by collectors for subtle differences in purple-mauve intensity compared to other island populations.

The Rusty Cichlid remains one of the most approachable mbuna species for hobbyists — less aggressive than most mbuna, sexually mature at a small size, and willing to breed in a range of tank conditions. Female mouthbrooding lasts 21–28 days, and fry are relatively hardy once released. The species is herbivorous in the wild but adapts well to quality cichlid flake and pellet foods. Hard, alkaline water matching Lake Malawi's chemistry is essential, though this species tolerates modest parameter variation better than many mbuna.
