Ironwood

Ironwood is one of the densest natural woods in the world, named for its remarkable hardness and weight. Pieces sink reliably from day one without soaking or preparation, making it one of the most convenient driftwood options for aquascapers. Its smooth, bark-textured surface has a refined, elegant appearance compared to the rougher texture of Malaysian or Mopani woods, lending a modern, sculptural quality to aquascape compositions.

The very low tannin release of Ironwood means it will not discolour the water or significantly alter water chemistry, making it suitable for all aquarium types from crystal-clear Dutch planted tanks to African cichlid setups where water clarity is paramount. This neutrality also makes it safe for sensitive marine-themed freshwater displays.

Ironwood's exceptional hardness means it resists decomposition for many years — potentially decades — in a submerged environment. Its smooth surface supports a clean, minimal aesthetic, though mosses and Anubias can still be attached with gel glue for a lush effect.
