Isbrueckeri Pike Cichlid

Crenicichla isbrueckeri is an attractively marked pike cichlid endemic to the Rio Jacuí drainage in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Named in honour of Ilse Isbrücker, a prominent Dutch ichthyologist, this species is valued among Crenicichla enthusiasts for the electric blue-green colouration that develops in the dorsal and caudal fins of males in spawning condition — an unusual level of colour intensity for a southern Brazilian pike cichlid.

Adapted to the cooler, well-oxygenated rivers of Rio Grande do Sul, C. isbrueckeri thrives at temperatures of 18–26°C and should not be kept at the higher tropical temperatures used for Amazonian relatives. Seasonal temperature variation between 18–20°C in winter and 24–26°C in summer can help trigger breeding. The species inhabits clear river stretches over sandy and rocky substrates.

At 20 cm C. isbrueckeri is a manageable species for a 200 L tank. It adapts well to frozen carnivore foods and pellets, and has been bred in captivity with good frequency by enthusiasts of southern Brazilian cichlids.
