Barbus janssensi is a riverine barb endemic to the Congo River drainage, inhabiting clear to lightly turbid rivers and streams with sandy or muddy substrates. It is a slender, moderately sized barb whose silver body is marked by a series of small dark spots along the lateral line, giving it a refined, understated appearance. Groups of this species school cohesively and are at their best in larger, well-filtered aquariums.

In captivity, Barbus janssensi is relatively undemanding, prospering under standard tropical soft-water conditions. It appreciates a spacious tank with open water for schooling, complemented by areas of plant cover and driftwood for shelter. Moderate to gentle filtration replicates the moderate-flow rivers it inhabits.

This species poses no difficulties in feeding; it accepts flake, micro-pellets, and frozen invertebrate foods with equal enthusiasm. Its peaceful temperament makes it suitable for any community aquarium containing non-predatory species, and it is particularly well-suited to Congo biotope displays alongside Congo tetras, ctenopoma, and killifish.
