Java Fern 'Latifolia'

Java Fern 'Latifolia' (Microsorum pteropus 'Latifolia') is among the largest Java Fern cultivars, producing broad, paddle- to lance-shaped leaves significantly wider than the standard form. Mature plants can reach 45 cm in height, making this a true background species for larger planted aquariums where its impressive foliage creates a bold structural backdrop.

As with all Java Ferns, the rhizome must be kept above the substrate and tied or glued to driftwood or rock. The plant is slow-growing but extremely hardy, tolerating a wide range of water conditions, temperatures, and lighting levels. It does particularly well in high-flow tanks where its broad leaves sway gently in the current.

Latifolia is a go-to choice for large cichlid tanks where most plants are destroyed — the tough, slightly bitter leaves are left untouched by even the most herbivorous cichlids. It is also superb in large Dutch or nature aquascapes as a background anchor plant.
