Java Fern Standard

Java Fern Standard (Microsorum pteropus) is arguably the most widely kept aquatic plant in the hobby, and for good reason. Its broad, lance-shaped, dark-green fronds grow from a creeping rhizome that can be tied or glued to virtually any piece of driftwood, rock, or hardscape — burying the rhizome will cause it to rot. New plantlets emerge directly from the leaf margins, making propagation effortless.

This species thrives in the full spectrum of aquarium conditions, from dimly lit community tanks to well-lit planted setups. It tolerates hard or soft water, a wide pH range, and temperatures from cool subtropical to warm tropical. Although it grows slowly, a single plant will in time fill considerable space, and its deep green colour contrasts beautifully with lighter foreground plants.

Java Fern is also fish-safe — virtually no fish will eat its tough, slightly bitter leaves — making it the ideal choice for cichlid tanks, goldfish aquariums, and herbivore set-ups where most plants are quickly destroyed.
