Java Fern 'Undulata'

Java Fern 'Undulata' (Microsorum pteropus 'Undulata') is distinguished by the pronounced undulation along its leaf margins, which gives each frond a wave-like, ruffled appearance. In aquariums with any water movement, these wavy edges animate beautifully, swaying with the current in a way that flat-leafed ferns cannot match.

The plant performs identically to other Java Fern cultivars: epiphytic attachment to hardscape, tolerance of low light, no need for CO2 injection, and slow but reliable growth. It produces adventitious plantlets on the leaf surface and rhizome offshoots that can be relocated once established.

In terms of layout, 'Undulata' serves well in mid- to background positions alongside smoother companions — the contrast between its wavy silhouette and the flat leaves of standard Java Fern or Anubias species is a classic aquascaping pairing. It mixes equally well in community tanks, cichlid tanks, and planted displays.
