Striuntius johorensis is native to the blackwater and peat swamp streams of the Johor region in southern Peninsular Malaysia, where it inhabits acidic, tannin-rich water with submerged wood and leaf litter. It is closely related to the Lined Barb (S. lineatus) but differs in body proportions and colour intensity. The lateral band in S. johorensis is particularly deep and dark, and the orange-red fin accents are vivid in breeding-conditioned adults.

In the aquarium, this species requires slightly more specialised conditions than many barbs — it thrives in acidic, soft, tannin-stained water similar to its native peat swamp habitat. Indian almond leaves, peat filtration, and driftwood create an appropriate environment. Groups of six or more display excellent schooling behaviour and intense fin colouration.

Despite its preference for specific water chemistry, Striuntius johorensis is not difficult to maintain if water conditions are met. It is a willing feeder accepting micro-pellets, frozen invertebrates, and small live foods. A dedicated Southeast Asian blackwater biotope tank showcases this species beautifully.
