The Gold form of Julidochromis ornatus is a colour-selected captive line in which the normal yellow-and-white body colouration has been deepened to a rich all-over golden yellow, while the characteristic horizontal black stripes remain bold and well-defined. This form has been maintained by European breeders for decades and is reliably available through specialist cichlid dealers.
Ornatus 'Gold' shares all the behavioural and husbandry characteristics of standard J. ornatus: a monogamous cave-spawning cichlid that forms long-lived pair bonds and produces small successive clutches of adhesive eggs deposited on the cave ceiling. Both parents guard the site and herd wrigglers actively. The species is among the most interactive and visible of all Tanganyika cichlids, spending most of the day in open water near its territory.
A rocky aquascape with multiple caves and crevices in a 80 L aquarium suits ornatus 'Gold' perfectly. It can be kept alongside shell-dwelling Neolamprologus, open-water Cyprichromis, and even some Tropheus in larger systems, making it a versatile component of a Tanganyika biotope display. Its striking gold colouration provides warm visual contrast against the blue and grey of a rocky Tanganyika setup.
