Jurupari Eartheater (Rio Tapajós)

Satanoperca jurupari from the Rio Tapajós is a large and elegant eartheater with a distinctly pointed snout that it uses to probe fine substrate for invertebrates and organic matter. Rows of iridescent spots along its flanks and gill covers shimmer brilliantly under appropriate lighting. This locality form is considered one of the cleaner, more sharply patterned representatives of the species.

As a Satanoperca, it is more demanding than most Geophagus in terms of water quality and requires consistently clean, slightly acidic, soft water. Strong biological and mechanical filtration combined with frequent partial water changes are essential. Deep fine sand — at least 10 cm — is non-negotiable for this prolific sifter.

Jurupari eartheaters are peaceful and do well in large community setups with robust tankmates. They are biparental mouthbrooders that display an extraordinary level of parental care, with eggs and fry being passed between both parents multiple times during incubation.
