Kafue Nothobranch

Nothobranchius kafuensis inhabits seasonal pools and temporary wetlands associated with the Kafue River floodplain in central Zambia. Males display vivid blue-red mosaic colouration typical of the genus, with the scale pattern varying between populations. The species is relatively unknown in mainstream fishkeeping but is prized by killifish specialists for its beauty and interesting population-level variation.

Husbandry follows standard Nothobranchius guidelines: a dedicated 30–40 L species tank, peat substrate for spawning, soft slightly acidic water, and a diet of live and frozen foods. Eggs require a dry diapause period of 8–10 weeks. Fry grow quickly and reach sexual maturity within 4–6 weeks of hatching.

N. kafuensis is a species that rewards keepers willing to source it from specialist suppliers or killifish societies. Its attractive colouration and manageable husbandry make it an excellent addition to any annual killifish collection.
