Khavli Mahseer

Tor remadevii, known as the Khavli or Remadevii Mahseer, is a large Tor species endemic to the rivers of the Western Ghats of southern India, where it inhabits fast-flowing, rocky rivers and deep pools. It is distinguished from other Tor species by its particularly large, keeled scales and a more elongated snout. Like all mahseer it is a prized sport fish and faces severe pressure from habitat loss and overfishing.

In an aquarium context, the Khavli Mahseer demands very large, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated facilities and is only suitable for large specialist displays or public aquariums. It is a powerful, active fish that requires enormous swimming space and cannot be adequately housed in a standard home aquarium. Its care requirements are broadly similar to those of other Tor species.

Sourcing should always be from verified captive-breeding programs given its threatened status. The Khavli Mahseer is an ambassador species for the critically important freshwater biodiversity of the Western Ghats.
