Knerii Whiptail Catfish

Sturisoma knerii is native to fast-flowing rivers of the Colombian Andes foothills and piedmont, where water temperatures are noticeably cooler than typical tropical river conditions. These rivers are typically clear, oxygen-rich, and high in velocity, conditions that strongly shape this species' requirements in captivity. It is not a suitable species for standard tropical community tanks maintained at 26–28°C.

The coolness and oxygenation requirements of Sturisoma knerii make it an ideal candidate for a specialised hillstream or Andean river biotope aquarium. Powerful filtration, a spray bar or powerhead creating visible surface agitation, and temperatures in the 20–25°C range are essential for long-term health. Under correct conditions it is a long-lived, robust species that will graze surfaces actively throughout the day.

Breeding Sturisoma knerii in captivity requires precise replication of Andean conditions. Hobbyists who have succeeded report that cooler water temperatures (around 20–22°C) combined with increased water flow appear to trigger spawning behaviour. Clutches are comparable in size to other Sturisoma species.
