Knight Pimelodid

Cheirocerus eques is an infrequently encountered pimelodid from the central Amazon and Orinoco drainages. Its silver-cream body is dotted with irregular dark spots and it has a typical pimelodid build with prominent barbels and a robust, slightly compressed body. The species name eques (knight) refers to its alert, upright bearing.

In the aquarium it is an active, inquisitive fish that is less aggressive than many of its larger relatives, making it possible to maintain with other medium-to-large South American species. It is an opportunistic predator and should not be housed with very small fish. It adapts well to meaty sinking foods.

Cheirocerus eques is a genuine rarity in the hobby and is sought by dedicated pimelodid collectors. When available, it commands a premium and is typically offered by specialist South American importers.
