Koi Angelfish (Domestic)

The Koi Angelfish is a highly popular captive strain combining orange, white, and black colouration that evokes the appearance of ornamental koi. The distribution of colour varies widely between individuals, with some showing heavy orange blotching while others display predominantly white bodies with scattered markings.

This strain carries genes for reduced melanin combined with orange/xanthic expression, producing the warm tri-colour effect. Like all domestic angels, they are adaptable to a broad range of aquarium conditions and are among the most widely kept cichlids in the hobby.

Koi angels are best displayed in tall aquaria with light-coloured substrate and background to maximise colour contrast. They are reliably hardy, breed readily, and interact actively with their keeper, making them an excellent choice for intermediate aquarists.
