Labiatus Eartheater (Paraná)

Gymnogeophagus labiatus stands out within its genus for the notably thickened, fleshy lips that give the fish a distinctive profile unlike most eartheaters. Native to the Paraná River system in Argentina and Paraguay, it is a sturdy, adaptable fish that shares the cold tolerance of its relatives while adding an unusual morphological character that puzzles and delights observers.

The function of its enlarged lips in the wild is believed to relate to feeding on harder substrates or foraging in crevices. In captivity it proves just as effective at sifting sand as its smooth-lipped relatives. Care requirements follow the standard Gymnogeophagus template: unheated or lightly heated tank, fine sand, robust filtration.

Gymnogeophagus labiatus is an open substrate spawner with biparental care. It is moderately easy to breed in captivity and represents an interesting addition to any temperate South American cichlid collection. Its unusual lip morphology reliably generates conversation among aquarium visitors.
