Labidochromis perlmutt

Labidochromis perlmutt takes its name from the German word for mother-of-pearl, a reference to the luminous iridescent sheen that distinguishes its scales. Found around the Maleri and Nakantenga islands in central Lake Malawi, males develop a beautiful blue-white iridescence over a pale buff base colouration, with darker markings on the dorsal fin.

Like other Labidochromis, this species feeds on invertebrates and aufwuchs, picking food items from rocky substrate with its pointed snout. It inhabits moderate depths around island rocky shores and is rarely collected in large numbers, contributing to its relative scarcity in the aquarium trade.

In the aquarium, Labidochromis perlmutt is best displayed in a well-lit tank where the pearlescent sheen of its scales can be fully appreciated. It is moderately peaceful for an mbuna and can form part of an island-endemic biotope alongside other Maleri/Nakantenga species. Optimal care involves stable alkaline water and quality nutrition to maintain vivid scale iridescence.
