Labidochromis sp. 'Hongi' Red Top, also known as the Red Top Hongi, is one of the most visually striking mbuna available in the aquarium hobby. Males display vivid electric-blue flanks with a dramatic, bright red to orange-red dorsal fin — a two-toned colour combination that makes this fish immediately eye-catching. Females are drab yellow-brown. The species originates from Hongi Island (also called Ingombe Island) and surrounding rocky habitat in northern Lake Malawi.

Despite being classified as a Labidochromis, the Red Top Hongi is considerably more aggressive than the well-known L. caeruleus (Yellow Lab). Males are territorial and competitive and should be managed in a 1M:3–4F harem configuration. As a maternal mouthbrooder, females hold eggs and fry for approximately 21–28 days. An algae-based diet prevents Malawi bloat. This is arguably the most beautiful Labidochromis and a flagship species for any serious Malawi collection.
