Labrina Pike Cichlid

Crenicichla labrina is one of the most frequently exported and readily available pike cichlids in the hobby, found throughout the central and lower Amazon basin. Its wide distribution across a range of river types — from whitewater várzea floodplains to clear-water tributaries — has given it a degree of physiological plasticity that makes it more forgiving in captivity than many congeners.

This is a large species, reaching 30 cm, and must be housed in a truly spacious aquarium — a minimum of 400 litres for a single specimen. Despite its size, C. labrina has a relatively classic pike cichlid appearance: a bold dark lateral band, scattered dark spots on the upper body, and silvery-white flanks. In optimal conditions adults develop a subtle olive-bronze sheen.

C. labrina feeds vigorously on frozen carnivore foods and accepts large cichlid pellets and sticks. It is one of the more straightforward large Crenicichla to maintain and breed — an ideal species for aquarists making the step from medium to large pike cichlids.
