Crenicichla lacustris is one of the most widely distributed pike cichlids along the Atlantic coast of southeastern Brazil, found in rivers from SΓ£o Paulo south through ParanΓ‘. It is a robust and adaptable species that has been in the European hobby for several decades, appreciated for its hardiness relative to many Amazonian Crenicichla. The broad dark lateral band and attractively spotted flanks make it a visually solid display fish.
Unlike many pike cichlids, C. lacustris tolerates a reasonably wide range of water parameters and even moderate hardness β a significant practical advantage for aquarists in Central Europe with harder tap water. Temperatures of 20β27Β°C reflect its subtropical distribution and it does not require high tropical warmth. Moderate oxygenation and good filtration are the key requirements.
At 25 cm C. lacustris needs a 300 L tank minimum. It is a proven species in captivity with documented breeding records. A reliable cave spawner, it exhibits strong biparental care and is one of the better choices for aquarists looking to breed a larger, Atlantic-slope Crenicichla without specialist water requirements.
