Lake Malawi Bathyclarias

Bathyclarias rotundifrons is one of several deep-water clariid catfish endemic to Lake Malawi, where it inhabits the deeper benthic zones largely inaccessible to typical aquarium collection. It is closely related to Clarias but adapted to the alkaline, hard, highly oxygenated waters of Lake Malawi — a very different environment from the acidic swamps favoured by most clariids. Its rounded head profile gives it a distinctive, blunt-nosed appearance compared to the flattened snout typical of Clarias.

In the aquarium, this species requires the alkaline, moderately hard Lake Malawi-type water parameters that most other large catfish do not. It can be an interesting addition to very large Malawi cichlid systems where its nocturnal activity complements the diurnal behaviour of the cichlids. It is, however, a predator and will eat small cichlids during the night.

B. rotundifrons is rarely available, appearing sporadically in specialist African cichlid imports. Collectors interested in Lake Malawi's hidden biodiversity beyond the famous cichlids will find it a rewarding and educational species.
