Largescale Barb

Barbus paludinosus ranges from Kenya south to South Africa and across into West Africa in certain drainage systems, inhabiting everything from fast rocky streams to sluggish floodplain channels and even brackish coastal lagoons. Its silvery body with large, prominent scales and a dark caudal spot gives it an understated elegance. It is among the hardiest of African barbs.

In the aquarium, this species is undemanding and does well across a wide pH and hardness range. Larger groups of six or more display confident schooling behaviour, constantly patrolling mid-water. It is an active fish that benefits from a tank with a good current and open swimming lanes balanced with planted cover.

Feeding is effortless — Barbus paludinosus is a true omnivore that will consume flake, pellets, fresh vegetables, and a variety of live or frozen invertebrates. Its hardiness and adaptability make it one of the best introductory African barbs for aquarists new to the continent's cyprinids.
