Largespot River Stingray

Potamotrygon falkneri inhabits the Paraná River basin of central South America, where it favours sandy and muddy substrates in slower reaches. Its distinctive pattern of large, well-spaced yellow-orange spots on a pale cream to tan background makes it highly recognisable and widely sought after in the ornamental trade. Adults reach a manageable size relative to other potamotrygonids, making it one of the more practical larger ray species for dedicated home aquaria. Like all Potamotrygon it is viviparous and has been bred successfully in captivity. Its hardiness and attractiveness have made it a popular introductory species for keepers stepping up from P. motoro.
