The Lemon Tetra is an elegant, moderately sized tetra from the Tapajós River system of Brazil. While its coloration is more understated than some of its flashier relatives, it has a refined beauty: a semi-transparent pale yellow to lemon body with a golden lateral sheen, a vivid yellow dorsal fin edged with black, and a distinctive bright red upper iris that draws the eye. Under good lighting and against dark substrate, the Lemon Tetra's coloration is genuinely striking, particularly when kept in a well-planted aquarium. Males in breeding condition develop particularly intense yellow hues and sharper fin markings. This species is hardy, adaptable, and tolerant of a broad range of water conditions, making it an excellent choice for beginners and experienced hobbyists alike. It is a mid-water schooling species, peaceful and active, that rarely bothers any tankmates. The Lemon Tetra's undemanding nature, attractive appearance, and wide compatibility make it a perennial favourite in the hobby. It does best in schools of six or more, where it displays confident schooling behavior and shows its best colors. A varied diet of flakes, pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods keeps it in top condition.
