Leopard Pleco L038

The Leopard Pleco (L038) is one of the most commonly encountered and robust loricariids in the aquarium hobby. Native to the main channel of the Amazon River in Brazil, it displays a classic pattern of uniformly distributed dark brown or black spots on a lighter tan or olive-brown base. Its impressive adult size and hardiness make it a staple of large community aquariums.

As a dedicated herbivore, L038 grazes continuously on algae and biofilm and appreciates large quantities of blanched vegetables, spirulina wafers, and algae-based pellets. Large pieces of driftwood are essential both as a grazing substrate and as cave structures for shelter. Despite its large size, it is not a destructive species and does not damage plant stems unless extremely hungry.

The Leopard Pleco is peaceful with virtually all tankmates and tolerates a wide range of water conditions. It is best housed in spacious aquariums with powerful filtration to handle the bioload of a large active pleco. Compatible with cichlids, large tetras, and most robust South American species. Avoid housing with other large plecos unless the tank exceeds 500 litres.
