Leopard Pleco L397

Hypancistrus sp. L397, the Leopard Pleco, is a handsome and desirable loricariid from the warm, rocky sections of the Rio Xingu in Brazil. Its dark brown to near-black body is covered with a dense, even distribution of bright white to cream circular spots — closely resembling the pattern of a leopard's coat — which become increasingly vivid in well-fed individuals under good lighting conditions.

At approximately 12 cm the L397 is a manageable size suitable for aquariums of 100 L or more. It requires warm water (26–30°C), moderate to strong flow, and caves for shelter and breeding. Its omnivorous diet includes both meaty and algae-based sinking foods. Males are territorial near caves but peaceful with dissimilar tankmates.

The Leopard Pleco L397 has been successfully bred in captivity by specialist hobbyists following the standard Hypancistrus cave-spawning approach. It is a relatively recent addition to the numbered L-system and remains somewhat less common than older established species, making it a prized find for serious pleco collectors.
