Mastacembelus pantherinus is one of the more visually distinguished spiny eels available in the hobby, displaying clearly defined, leopard-like dark spots arranged across a pale tan to golden background. Native to the Salween and Irrawaddy river drainages of Myanmar, it inhabits moderately flowing rivers and still oxbow lakes with soft substrate and abundant debris.

Its moderate adult size of around 55 cm makes it manageable in a well-planned 220 L or larger aquarium. It is robustly built compared to smaller spiny eels and requires deep sand, strong filtration, and a fully secured lid. Like the white-spotted spiny eel, its contrasting markings are best appreciated under moderate lighting against a dark sand substrate.

Earthworms produce the strongest feeding response and should form the core of its diet, supplemented with prawns, mussel, and frozen bloodworm. It is peaceful toward large robust tankmates including bichirs, large cyprinids, and peaceful cichlids. Its combination of attractive markings and manageable size makes it a particularly rewarding intermediate species.
