Leopard Synodontis

Synodontis pardalis wears a dense, high-contrast pattern of dark spots on a pale background that closely resembles the coat of a leopard, giving it one of the more self-explanatory common names in the genus. Native to the Congo River basin, it is a moderately large, sturdy species that adapts well to aquarium life.

In captivity it is hardy and undemanding regarding water chemistry within a reasonable range, making it one of the more beginner-accessible large Synodontis. It is an active nocturnal forager that nevertheless becomes bolder and more visible during the day in well-structured tanks.

This species serves as an excellent centrepiece bottom-dweller in Congo-theme aquariums alongside butterlyfish, African tetras and large cichlids.
