Lepidiolamprologus nkambae is a specialist predator collected from Nkamba Bay in Lake Tanganyika, where it uses speed and stealth to raid the flanks of other fish, removing and consuming scales with its uniquely adapted jaw morphology. This feeding strategy makes it incompatible with small or soft-scaled tankmates, and careful species selection is essential when planning its aquarium.

In appearance nkambae is elegant — a slender, torpedo-shaped fish with a silver body overlaid with faint horizontal banding and blue-grey iridescence. Dominant males develop a slightly more intense colouration around the head. The species is a cave-spawner; the female guards eggs and fry in a crevice or shell while the male defends the broader territory.

Nkambae is recommended for advanced Tanganyika hobbyists only. Its tank must be spacious (150 L minimum), well-filtered, and stocked only with larger, thick-scaled cichlids that can tolerate occasional scale-raiding behaviour. Despite its predatory feeding habit the fish is not aggressive in the conventional sense and ignores tankmates outside of feeding interactions.
