Lethrinops microdon

Lethrinops microdon is named for its small, fine teeth — an adaptation for filtering fine invertebrates and organic matter from the sandy substrate of Lake Malawi. This small to medium-sized species is one of the more compact Lethrinops, making it slightly more manageable in moderately sized aquaria while still requiring the characteristic sandy floor and open swimming space of the genus.

Males develop a clean blue-silver nuptial coloration during spawning season, with subtle horizontal banding visible under good lighting. The species is among the most peaceful in its genus and can be kept in a harem arrangement of one male to several females. Its gentle nature and modest size make it accessible to Malawi beginners.

A reliable maternal mouthbrooder that breeds readily in well-maintained aquaria. Works well in mixed-species biotope setups with other peaceful sand-dwellers. The constant foraging activity adds natural interest to the aquarium landscape.
