Limbata Snakehead

Channa limbata is a moderately sized snakehead distributed across the lowland rivers and ponds of India and Bangladesh. It has a robust, cylindrical body with a series of large irregular dark blotches along the lateral line over an olive-brown ground colour. It is less frequently traded than some of its more spectacular relatives but is considered one of the more manageable of the medium-large Indian snakeheads due to its adaptability and tolerance of varied water conditions.

Like all snakeheads it is an obligate air-breather, a skilled jumper, and a determined predator of anything smaller than itself. Tank lids must be completely sealed and tankmates limited to robust fish of comparable size. Despite its aggression toward other fish, individual specimens often develop a recognisable relationship with their keeper and may accept hand-feeding.

Breeding is possible in captivity in very large aquariums. The species appears to practise biparental or paternal guarding of eggs and fry. Conditioning on high-quality live and fresh foods and providing a large, sparsely structured aquarium promotes spawning readiness.
