Limnophila aromatica

Limnophila aromatica is a well-established Dutch aquascape favourite from Southeast Asia, recognised by its whorled leaf arrangement and the pleasant herbal-spicy fragrance released when stems are trimmed — the scent is reminiscent of Thai basil and gives the plant its species name. Leaves are green under moderate light and develop pinkish tones at higher intensities.

It is among the more accessible whorled stem plants, tolerating a reasonable range of water hardness and performing well with or without CO2 injection, though injection produces notably more compact, colourful growth. It grows quickly and benefits from regular trimming every 1–2 weeks.

A staple background plant for Dutch layouts and community planted tanks alike, L. aromatica is an excellent entry point into the more demanding Limnophila genus before progressing to more specialist species.
