Limnophila sessiliflora

Limnophila sessiliflora occurs naturally in still and slow-flowing waters throughout tropical and subtropical Asia, including India, Sri Lanka, China, and Southeast Asia, where it grows in rice paddies, ditches, and shallow lake margins. It has long been a staple in the aquarium trade as a softer-textured, easier alternative to Cabomba or Myriophyllum, tolerating harder water and lower light than those species. Its slender stems carry whorls of 5–8 finely divided, bright-green leaves at each node, creating a feathery appearance reminiscent of a miniature version of Limnophila aquatica. In the aquarium it is fast-growing under moderate lighting and makes an excellent background filler that can help manage algae by competing for nutrients in new or imbalanced setups. Unlike many fine-leaved stem plants, Limnophila sessiliflora tolerates a range of water hardness levels, making it accessible to aquarists with average tap water. It also serves as an excellent spawning substrate for egg-scattering fish like barbs and tetras. In historical aquarium literature it is sometimes listed under the synonym Ambulia sessiliflora.
