Lined Spiny Eel

Macrognathus taeniagaster is a small and attractively marked spiny eel from the rivers and swamps of peninsular Malaysia and southern Thailand. Its distinguishing feature is a set of fine, parallel longitudinal lines running along the flank, giving it a cleaner and more streamlined appearance than spotted or blotched species.

Its small maximum size of around 22 cm and peaceful temperament place it firmly in the community aquarium category, making it compatible with a wide range of medium-sized peaceful species. A planted aquarium with fine sand, gentle filtration, and subdued lighting provides ideal conditions and will encourage daytime activity.

Like all spiny eels it is a dedicated burrower and requires soft substrate to feel secure. Feeding presents no challenges: live and frozen bloodworm, tubifex, and micro-worm are eagerly consumed, with most individuals eventually accepting quality micro-pellets. A secure lid is essential as this species will attempt to escape given the opportunity.
