Liquid carbon supplements based on glutaraldehyde provide a practical organic carbon source for non-CO2 planted tanks. The glutaraldehyde molecule is metabolised by some aquatic plants as a supplementary carbon source, supporting metabolism in low-CO2 environments where photosynthesis would otherwise be carbon-limited.

A secondary but well-documented benefit is algae control. Glutaraldehyde is particularly effective against black beard algae (BBA) when applied as a spot treatment, and regular column dosing suppresses many other algae species.
