Lobetoothed Piranha

Pygopristis denticulata is the sole species of its genus and stands apart from true piranhas by possessing multicuspid (multi-pointed) teeth rather than the razor-blade single-cusped dentition of Pygocentrus and Serrasalmus. This dental adaptation reflects a more omnivorous diet that includes aquatic invertebrates, small fish, seeds, and fruits.

It is somewhat less aggressive than the carnivorous piranhas but still requires careful housing management. Small schools of three to five individuals display more natural behaviour than solitary specimens. Its unusual dentition and intermediate feeding ecology make it a fascinating subject for specialist piranha keepers.
