Long-finned Brycinus

Brycinus longipinnis, the Long-finned or African Longfin Tetra, is one of the largest and most impressive West African characins regularly available in the hobby. Its sleek silver body is complemented by notably elongated dorsal and pelvic fins, giving mature males a particularly elegant appearance. It inhabits rivers of West and Central Africa, from the Niger to the Congo drainage.

In the aquarium, this species is peaceful and schooling despite its size, making it an excellent choice for large West African biotopes alongside robust cichlids, larger barbs, and other substantial community fish. Strong water movement and excellent oxygenation are appreciated, mirroring fast-flowing river conditions.

Feeding is undemanding: quality larger flake, pellets, and frozen foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp, and krill are all accepted. It is a robust and long-lived species that rewards the aquarist with active, schooling display behaviour. Groups of six or more produce the best results.
