Longnose Squeaker

Synodontis longirostris is an immediately distinctive species by virtue of its greatly extended, pointed snout — longer relative to body length than in any other Synodontis — which it uses to probe deep into rock crevices and sandy substrate for hidden invertebrates. Native to East African river systems including rift-valley tributaries, it inhabits areas with large rocky outcrops and mixed sandy and rocky substrate.

In the aquarium it is an active forager that spends much of its time methodically working over the substrate. It is a large-growing species and requires substantial swimming space; adults in under-sized tanks become stressed and prone to disease.

Due to its size it is best kept with robust medium to large tankmates and should be provided with numerous overhanging rock structures under which it can shelter.
