The Loreto Tetra is a relatively rare and underappreciated species in the aquarium hobby, native to slow-moving blackwater streams and flooded forest areas of the Loreto department in northeastern Peru and neighboring Colombian Amazon tributaries. It is a small, slender tetra reaching around 3.5 cm, with a deep, dark lateral stripe running from the snout to the base of the caudal fin, reddish-orange fin accents, and a translucent silver body with subtle iridescence. While it lacks the bold, high-contrast colors of more popular tetras, it has an understated elegance that appeals to those who appreciate more natural-looking fish. Like many species from this region, it thrives in soft, acidic conditions and does not fare as well in hard, alkaline water. A biotope-style setup with tannin-stained water, leaf litter, and dim lighting mimics its natural environment and encourages the richest coloration. The Loreto Tetra is peaceful, schooling, and compatible with other soft-water community fish of similar size. It can be shy and benefits from dense planting and the security of a large group.
