Lucius Pike Cichlid

Crenicichla lucius is a mid-sized predator whose common and scientific names both reference the Northern Pike (Esox lucius), reflecting its particularly streamlined, hydrodynamic body form. Native to the Rupununi savannas of Guyana and adjacent lower Amazon drainages, it inhabits clear and blackwater rivers and streams over sandy substrates, often in slow-moving or standing water near aquatic vegetation.

In the aquarium, C. lucius is a competent and active swimmer that appreciates a longer tank footprint. The 300 L minimum should ideally be in a 150 cm or longer format to allow this species to display its natural swimming behaviour. Sandy substrate, root tangles, and scattered driftwood provide shelter and territorial structure. Water should be soft to moderately hard and slightly acidic.

This species feeds readily on frozen carnivore foods and adapts well to quality cichlid pellets. Its care requirements are not extreme by Crenicichla standards, and it is a reliable choice for experienced cichlid keepers wanting a genuine predatory display fish without the demands of the very largest species.
