Lufuko Barb

Barbus lufukiensis is endemic to the Lufuko River drainage in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a tributary system feeding into the southern end of Lake Tanganyika. It inhabits clear to lightly turbid rivers with moderate current and mixed substrate. Rarely exported in large numbers, it is a sought-after species for specialists keeping the fish of the Congo-Tanganyika interface.

In the aquarium, this species requires similar conditions to other medium-sized African barbs: soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water, good oxygenation, and ample swimming space. It is a schooling fish that becomes more confident and displays better coloration in groups of six or more. Moderate water movement and a tidy, well-filtered tank suit it best.

Feeding Barbus lufukiensis presents no difficulties: it takes flake, pellets, and a variety of frozen or live invertebrates. Its rarity in the trade makes it a prized addition to specialist African aquariums, particularly those focused on the Congo-Tanganyika transition zone.
