Lugubris Pike Cichlid

Crenicichla lugubris is a large and formidable pike cichlid from the Guianan region, inhabiting the Essequibo, Demerara, and adjacent river systems. Its silver-grey body bears large, clearly defined dark spots along the lateral line, and adults develop a deep-bodied, powerful profile that reflects its ambush predator lifestyle. Females of breeding pairs can display vivid red colouration on the belly.

As one of the larger Crenicichla species, C. lugubris requires a very spacious aquarium with robust filtration and strong water movement replicating the fast, oxygen-rich rivers it inhabits. Sandy substrate with scattered rocks and driftwood provides appropriate furnishing. It is strictly a carnivore and should be fed meaty sinking foods.

Captive breeding of C. lugubris follows the typical large Crenicichla open-spawning pattern: eggs deposited in a cave or sheltered substrate area, guarded by the female while the male defends the outer territory. Females in breeding condition display spectacular colouration. Breeding pairs can be highly aggressive and must be monitored carefully.
