Luminosus Dario

Dario luminosus was described from the Chindwin river drainage in northeastern India, reflecting the extraordinary diversity of the Badidae family in this region. Its common name captures its most notable attribute: a remarkably intense metallic shimmer across the scales of adult males, ranging from blue-silver to green-gold depending on the angle of light, overlaid with the characteristic dark vertical banding of the genus.

This species inhabits still and slow-flowing habitats with dense emergent vegetation, leaf-litter substrates, and naturally tannin-stained water. Recreating these blackwater conditions in the aquarium — using driftwood, Indian almond leaves, and peat filtration — produces the most vivid colouration and most relaxed behaviour. As with all Dario, it is a specialist live-food feeder.

Cave-spawning has been confirmed and breeding follows the pattern established for other species in the genus. The male selects and defends a small cave, courts the female, and guards the eggs with great dedication. Fry emerge free-swimming after approximately ten days and require micro live foods from their first meal.
